This started out as just a small prop in my garage scene, but I started having fun with it.
EDIT: I'm having problems getting the rough, less reflective part to look right.

Well... I wasn't trying to be a suck up. smile.gif
I was going for something in the spirit of Judas Priest's "Rocka Rolla"

OR "British Steel" album cover.

I had different versions, including the original Craftsman, but I thought, what fun would that be? Also, if it's not too much trouble can someone move this to 3d wips. I goofed. Thanks

Not yet... I think it would require a 3DS Maxforum branded teapot for us to be able to do that.

try making the diffuse of that section lighter, because its not as reflective the actual steel is probably lighter in colour, will get rid of that reflected shadow on the right too.

I'm new to Vray materials, I had the diffuse color as black. I changed it to dark gray, I think that helped a bunch, thanks.

I'll get to work on that teapot, cause I'm sure as leader of the free world I could do something about gas prices wink.gif

EDIT: UPDATE Photo

Its looking really awesome. That certainly did help. Though I think if you slightly changed the regions it would look a bit better.

In my attached image I marked where the grainy material should go in red, and I reckon where I've got green use the full reflective material.

Give that a go.

(ps. cant wait to see that teapot haha)

I think I see what your saying about the green and red areas. I'd like to make the rough area gradually change to full, or near full reflectivity as it goes to the sides, but I'm not to sure how to do that. That's how the actual wrench is. It's shinier on the corners and sides due to wear. Anyway I think I have the rough material better than I did, if I knew how to blend it to the shiny parts.
Thanks for the input.

You'll have to use a mix map in your glossiness slot. In put your shiny map or colour (light) in slot 1 and then your dull map or colour (dark) in slot 2. In the mix amount slot put a mask that tells max where you want each map to be on the spanner. You can take a screenshot or render of the top view of your spanner into photoshop and paint a mask by hand over the top in a new layer and then delete the bottom layer.

I seem to be getting MIXED results, hahaha, I'll have to keep playing with the mix map. I need pictures man! pictures! smile.gif
A full blown tutorial would be nice too..(hint hint)
Seriously though, like I mentioned earlier, I'm very new to Vray materials and any further assistance will not go unappreciated.

A tutorial would stiil be cool, but I think I'm slowly getting there. I couldn't figure out how to make the mask work like you said, so I tried something else I've always had problems with, UVW unwrap. I finally managed to unwrap the wrench so I can paint it in shades of gray. How can I use this, not only to control reflectivity/glossiness, but the amount and location of bump that is applied?
The picture below just has the map I made applied to the reflective slot. I also have a mix map in the bump slot with the same map applied to the mask slot (within mix map) and speckle applied to the color one slot. I hope that makes sense to you all.

One easy way would be to paint onto your mesh with vertex colours.
and use that as a mask.

put a vertex paint modifier on the wrench and paint a black and white mask. then use vertex colour map in your material. good for a quick mask.

also, up the subdivisions in your glossyness to smooth it out 15-25.

personally I would just use a box uvw map and get a nice scratched metal bitmap to look right on the whole object then,

put a mix map in the glossyness slot and mix your scratched metal with white or grey (ie shiny metal) then use the vertex colours to mix the two together.

turn on interpolation if its too slow. I'd say 25 subdivs will get a nice smooth result and capture the detail of the scratches in your bitmap.

One more thing is to get rid of the tiling in your floor texture. get a high res photo of the your garage floor instead so it doesnt need to tile at all.
