Hi everyone,

I'm sorry if most of you know already, (first timers will certainly benefit from this), but I've been modelling for 2 years now and have just found a way to select capped borders (don't know if entirely correct term) with such ease! I just wanted to share with you because if I knew someone knew a good method how to select them, I would have liked to know grin.gif.

I only thought of it because I was trying to find a quick method of selecting the edges, loop and border did not work so I had to select them individually which took forever. I couldn't just drag select them because I didn't want to select the edges underneath. Then I was wondering if detaching would work, but would mean I would have to reweld verts making it an inconvenience and even more time consuming, but then that's where 'hide all' under poly mode comes in. I can't believe I never thought of it.

Here is the video (only 255kB can you believe! lol):

Cheers.

yep that's a good idea, defintely something to remember.

I noticed you were individually clicking a lot of those edges to deselect them. You should try holding ctrl+alt while left clicking and dragging to deselect edges. It'll speed you up even more.

That's brilliant! I didn't even know you could deselect them like that. I'm glad I posted this, we've helped each other wink.gif. Now I know why it takes me quad the time to finish my projects when other people can do them in a few days. All down to tricks of the trade.

I've uploaded a revised version of the video to include the easy process of deselcting edges like Steve_Martin suggested. It also shows the loop method not working. The title really should have been ' When Loop Is No Option', but I guess it was late and I got a bit confused lol. Glad you both like the video.

Maybe we should sticky a Tozzy's help thread in the tutorial section and stick all these in there. You're like the windows paperclip of 3dsmaxforum.com only you are actually helpful. smile.gif

Hi guys, sorry taken a long time to get back to you, been working too much lol. This modelling's making me tired. Anyway, yep that would be cool if you could put them in the tutorial section. I forgot there was a tutorial section. I could have put them there if I had have remembered. I wouldn't bother putting them all in one thread though, maybe just keep them as separate threads if you want so people know exactly what the thread contains from the title. Feel free to rename the titles and get rid of the 'Helper' bit as it would no longer be relevant if put in the tutorial section. I also have another little helper to throw in that section too. Nothing major, but something that I think first timers could benefit from mostly. I imagine the more advanced will know about it, but if you don't then it will help you too. I think I always did have an idea that the method existed, but never tried it out and certainly not used it during my work.

Steve_Martin, thanks for the compliment smile.gif. That's exactly what forums are about, we all help each other. I've picked up lots of help from people so it's nice to give something back in return. If I do happen to discover anything useful, I will post in the tutorial section.

Cheers.

P.S. If one of you guys could rename the title of this thread to: 'When Loop Is No Option', that would be great. How could one use the border option when the mesh is closed?!!! Silly me lol.
