Hello,

i have a problem with a Car Model im trying to bring into my favorite Racing sim. The faces are facetted, i tried to use the smooth modifier and auto-smooth feature, but the faces dont change. I made a screenshot of the problem, you can view it here:

Any help appreciated! smile.gif Thanks in advance for your tips.

Try converting the model to an editable poly and then use autosmooth at about 45 degrees. Otherwise you need to make selections like the inside of the tire hub and create smoothing groups one by one.

Thanks for you help Tyson, but it seems like there are no changes whatever i try to do, neither the convertion to editable poly or creating smoothing groups did the trick.

I must admit that i am not very good at 3dsmax, maybe i just didnt do it right, could you check out the .max file itself and see how to solve the problem? That would be awesome.. dont get me wrong i dont want you to do my work smile.gif It would just be really helpful if you could check it out and tell me how to solve it on my own.

I zipped the file here -> http://www.rage-motorsport.de/f430.zip

Thanks alot!

I had a muck around with it and couldn't fix it either. Have you tried importing it into the game engine? Most game engines will automatically smooth models so it may not be a problem.

I had a look just now. The mesh isnt smoothing properly because all the polygons are separated. meaning that each polygon is a separate element and the vertices are not welded together.

I tried welding all the vertices by a very low weld threshold but the surface looks very bad afterwards. You could go through and fix up all the problems by welding vertices and creating different smooth groups for each section however its most likely just the export settings used when the model was created or when you imported it into max. Try importing again and turn on any settings that say weld vertices or similar. It depends what model format you are using.
