Thanks, good idea on the scatter thing. I found scatter under compound objects (Max 2008) , I used it (conservatively)around the barrel and between the doors, but I didn't see an option for making the objects vary in size so I threw in a few manually placed objects. I also added a dirt map to the wall, door and floor.
I'm having a problem with the building behind the fence, it's supposed to be across an alley about the width of a car but it looks like its right up against the fence. Any suggestions on how to convey that this is a separate building more clearly?
A window maybe?

I heard of applying a noise modifier to your scatter to randomly distort scale and stuff. +Jamie would know, he was telling me about it.

The light coming from in there would help, but as your first impression is that its against the fence it looks really weird.
I think its because you cant see the floor past the fence, all that junk is in the way. Maybe reposition it, slightly, so that we get a bit of the floor coming through.

Per your suggestion I moved some stuff around to get a view past the fence, but no matter what I did it still looked weird. The more visible I made the alley the more distracting it was. So, as you can see in the update, I said screw the fence.

theres a cool tool called advanced painter for scattering stuff at scriptspot.com you can paint with a scatter object or multiple scatter objects with random rotations and offsets also paint splines onto a surface etc..not sure if theres a version for max 2008 yet.
also, download and install the blur scripts pack from scriptspot. theres some really handy stuff like a random transform script for instance. select a bunch of objects set it to rotate and scale and you have instant randomness. easier than writing it yourself..
If your not down with using scripts just go to maxscript>run script and find a script. open them in notepad to find out how they work.
