Hey whats up ladies & gents...my name is Sal "McLovin" Rossi...just barely started using Max about 3 months ago and loving it. Im currently a student majoring in Animation / Game Design, thought I'd come in here and get some pointers from those who are in the industry and those who are highly proficient at Max and pretty much all levels. I havent really done "big" things in Max yet, im working on some stuff but I will soon be getting more organized and start posting things up....

For my first question
My computer is horrible right now, im at about 512MB of RAM, it's just an old computer that cant handle Max 9....Now, what is everyone using..? RAM memory, specs all that good stuff, im gonna upgrade in the next couple of weeks but I want to make sure im going to spend my money on something thats well worth it, once I really get into unleashing the "artistic creative" me I want to render in Mental Ray, so im sure thats going to take up allot of juice...any and all suggestions welcome..
I AM McLOVIN...

Welcome aboard.

I am using:
Intel Dual 2.8Ghz
2GB Kingston RAM
ATI 9800 Pro

Its a little laggy, especially in some newer games, my video card is choking it. Unfortunately its AGP, so it mean an entire system upgrade.

I suggest you look into vRay aswell, most of us here prefer it over Mental Ray, just to keep your options open.

Welcome, and well done for posting in the correct section.

My computer: Intel Core 2 q6600 Quad
2gig Ram
Nvidia 8800 GTX, (well when I get the bloody thing back anyway - it's been getting fixed for the past few months so I've currently got a 8500 GT which is nowhere near as good)

When it's all working it runs beautifully.

Hey dude I am having endless troubles with an 8500 GT. Brand newie and all I get is blank screen once the forceware drivers are activated.

You can run it without drivers but no acceleration.

So when you have th drivers installed it goes blank screen right after the XP loading screen.

Any ideas?

Hi SamuraiMex,

Welcome to the forum. My specs:

When I work, I use my laptop as I can work closely with the object(s) I'm working on which is extremely important in the modelling world.

2Ghz Athlon AMD
512MB RAM (or 256mb which says in my system information file and 480mb on my system properties lol so I don't know what to believe there).
32MB Radeon IGP

I do my rendering on a desktop PC:

2Ghz Intel Celeron
256MB RAM
64MB Geforce 4 MX 440

All the best.

Looks like a good setup. The GFX card isn't the most powerful but you should be fine, the later versions of max are pretty well optimised so even high poly scenes run smoothly even on lower end cards.

"320 GB Hard Drive @ 10,000 RPMs"

Tonnes of space, for those huge MAX files. lol I have 800 files and that is just for one project model alone, nearly 3GB so far.

"and ofcourse Windows XP ...no Vista for me...heard too many horror stories"

Yay, another one who's not letting XP die smile.gif. Anyways good luck with your new setup. Should be a mean beast tongue.gif.

yeh, I would have said that in the past but I've had massive problems with an nvidia 8800gtx. Bought it in November, it never worked and they still haven't fixed it. Not happy.

I'm using an 8500 GT 512 meg. Soon to be upgraded to 8800.

It struggles sometimes in Oblivion, Full Settings 1680x1050 with HDR+AA and the Almost Everything Visible When Distant mod.

I think what I have at the moment is an 8500GTS and for what it is it runs pretty well. Watch out for those 8800s Matt they've had a lot of problems with that series.

My mate has an 8800 GT, and its been fine. Only thing is a bug in the drivers to control the fans, but he uses 3rd party fan software anyway.

Oh yeah man, GTX is the way to go. I hear they overclock really well too.

Unfortunately the 8500 I'm on at the moment is a "silent" model. So no fans, only one massive heatsink.

I can manage to clock it up from 600 to 620 Mhz, but it doesn't really do much. And I'm noticing its starting to heat up and cause Oblivion to crash even at default clock speed.

Thanks for the comments. I've always found it annoying that a lot of forums aren't willing to help people who are just starting out. We were all new to 3d once, some people seem to forget this.
