no none, its all personal. With the meager amount of paid work i've received i've always found myself kind of rushed. its more a case of just getting it done so it looks reasonable rather than pushing it to perfection. with personal work i have all the time in the world

It's absolute crap that work of that quality can't get any sort of permanent or even semi permanent work. In fact, if you have a look at some of the quality of work that's been posted on this forum, it really makes you wonder why many of us can't get a decent job. Location perhaps?
What happened to getting a go and getting a chance to prove yourself? I've had lots of positive feedback on my work, (especially latest images) but stuff all paid work. It's so frustrating wondering how good you actually have to be to get a go from some of these places. Sorry to rant, but I do feel strongly about this issue. I would have thought that most animation or vfx studios would jump at the chance to employ a junior with a reel like yours. It's good quality work without the high asking price. What's not to like? And as you said about the commercial work, "it's just a case of getting it done so it looks reasonable" why wouldn't you want someone who could do it on the cheap??
It can make you doubt yourself and really make you wonder what sort of superhuman animation abilities you need to get a job. It took me 3 demo reels before I got some paid work and so far its been a few weeks employment here and there then a couple of months of nothing. its so frustrating and I really do think it comes down to location. theres only a few companies here and they all already have a core group of people working for them.
where have you applied? anywhere in Adelaide?

I've had a fair bit of contact with a place called monkeystack here in Adelaide. Had lots of good feedback, but there's no work. I've applied for the RSP traineeship twice, and at a place called Gruntworks animation studios (I've rung them several times and no-one's ever answered - no message service either). I was pretty much hired by a guy in sydney who was starting a previs company, but it's been about a year and nothing's happened yet. I even flew over there at my own expense and met him one day. The last I heard from him was a few months back when he sent me the email address of one of his mates who is a stunt man who sometimes needs 3d visualisations to pitch for stunt jobs on movies or tv. I emailed the guy and he rang me shortly after and we ended up deciding that we'd do a trial run and he's send me a story board for me to "bring to life" Haven't heard from him since. It's stuff like this that's the worst. There seem to be a lot of people in the industry with their heads up their own arses.http://www.3dprevis.com

I actually hadn't heard of either of those companies before. huh and I thought I had researched all the Adelaide companies. Monkeystack looks the most promising, maybe if you hound them enough they'll eventually crack. worked for me and the pra. You could always apply at krome (games company) as a character modeler or asset modeler, they have an Adelaide office. I would suggest the companies I've worked for, but they use Maya. bit unfortunate since we from Mad learnt Max but thats how it goes.

Yeah, its a great animation reel. Theres alot of competition for animators I guess. and lots of character work is done in Maya aswell. I'd say if your passion is animation you need to get good in all the major packages, which is apparently not as hard to do as say being a modeller in all packages. most of the animators I speak to over here say they animate in max maya and xsi. And yes, you guys are in the wrong area. Its a deserted island in Sydney when it comes to finding good consistent work so I'm not at all surprised its hard to get a gig over there. I was talking to a friend who does industrial design stuff and he suggested doing corporate product animations and stills on the reel, then approaching companies like his for contracts. boring but it could be an angle.
