I was just mucking around with Vue 6 and decided to post it. It seems pretty easy to get a reasonable result, this image only took about half an hour to do. Obviously it needs a bit of work eg the tree closest to camera and the mapping on Norman is out of whack (the texture was created in z-brush - I wasn't sure how to do the -1 tilling thing in vue but I've figured it out now. The Vue renderer has a little postproduction pop-up window on completion of the render where you can change contrast, hue, saturation etc and add lens glare. It's pretty good for making your renders that little bit better. This one took 58 minutes which isn't too bad considering it's nearly 1 million polys.

You obviously greatly overestimate my painting skills. As for the ground, you only have to look to the feature artist banner (where is he by the way?) to see how that it can be done in max. I'm sure it's quicker in Vue though.

yea but the clumps of grass in this image are so much more realistic ... I usually use hair and fur and vector paint myself.

Yes It's awesome you can paint paths and then use a noise map or something to add height variation.

There is something terribly sinister about that cow lurking amongst the trees. You should pose him so he looks like he is creeping through the area. Not sure about Vue so I can't really crit you on anything with that..
Like this giant fish in a bear suit. He would be horrible. Look at him go!!

I played with vue 5 a little bit. I can see how it can be usefull for rendering lots of trees and grass but I cant help but feel like its a bit too easy to get it to happen similar to using the treestorm plugin, or even the darktree textures material in max (which I do quite a bit). But with that said, I think if you can create great compositions and evoke an emotional response it shouldnt really matter what tools you use.

I think theres room for alot of debate about such things.
I saw several images in imagine FX that were 2d digital paintings and you could clearly see that they had used poser then painted over the top. It also annoys me sometimes when you model every blade of grass and paint every lump on a tree trunk in max then have people think you just clicked a tree button, I dont know its so subjective really, you could say the same thing about hair and fur or using CAT for your rigging, whatever gets you there I suppose. I do like how vue has such nice environmental effects I think thats what really sells alot of 3d images having soft lens effects and depth fog really makes it look alot more real..

I think it's main attraction is it's speed and ease of use for commercial work. It is a hell of a lot quicker and cheaper to do that sort of stuff in Vue rather than modelling every blade of grass. However, you probably won't receive a lot of respect from your peers in the cg community.

I think it would be much more satisfying if you were a traditional artist because everyone at some point in their lives has tried to paint and they know how hard it is. I showed a painting I did to someone and they were like "oh cool" and then I said yea I painted it in photoshop, suddenly all interest was lost and he acted like I cheated somehow. It can be a little disheartening sometimes.

Yeh, there's probably always gonna be the perception that if you create something on a computer you've cheated somehow.

It only really proves the ignorance of the vast majority of people in response to the digital medium. Obviously there are ways to cheat, and the nature of technology can make it easy to lift and manipulate content.
