Looks great - now place it into a setting to achieve true realism.

Thats great for your first try.

The only thing I can mention is that instead of applying the material to the whole object (and get the woodgrain continuing across all the panels) isolate the individual faces and make a couple of differently oriented wood materials, so that the grain goes in the correct direction for the panel. Also to give it a little variety.

Thanks for posting. Looking forward to seeing more work from you Scott.

Yeah, kind of, and what you can do with the different textures is you can rotate the bitmaps differently for each one that has to go in a different direction, just use trial and error until it looks right.

Hi scott, Looking good, try fiddling with the scaling of your texture bitmaps too, if you increase the tiling it will scale the texture down and you will find a balance that fits the size of your model.

You should also pay attention to the more minor details of you textures, for example the grain of the wood will generally go in the same direction of the planks and should look more like indivudual pieces of wood. Are you familiar with the UVW map modifier?

It's great that you posted some work though, that way we can help you more effectively.

Keep up the good work.

I would apply the materials in this way. Isolate each of the faces with a line through it and create a material (they can even be all based on the same wood texture) that aligns the grain of the wood with the direction of the line.

New material
Add a texture to the diffuse slot in the Maps rolldown
Should come up with the tiling and angle options
Play with those and create one for each different plank of wood you need.

Firstly hello and welcome to the forums. I think you are refering to the lighting in this scene. It is quite simple you have to create a light object in max and position it so that it lights you scene in the way you want. Light in max is much like light in the real world minus the ability to turn of shadows wink.gif. if your unsure how to use lights in max have a look in the manual (F1). You will also find that many people including myself use software renders not included with max to render our final images. I would recomend using vray or mental ray but for the moment just have a play with the default max lights and renderer. Hope this helps enjoy.
We're getting very close, so close we can taste it. And it tastes like awesome.

Well thats a little hard to explain, does anyone else feel like explaining this because I really can not be botherd ... the theory behind lighting and rendering is quite complex and not something I feel I can explain in a forum post. I would recomend doing a google search for vray you will see some examples of what it can do. Keep in mind that mental ray comes with max and thier is some documentation on it also. I like vray however because it is far faster and more versitile than mental ray. Anyways im blabing...

go to the modifier stack dropdown thingy and press the S key untill you find it. There is also reactor cloth and i think another one simply called cloth. Isn't simcloth a plug in?

Yep, it's a third party plugin. You can get it here:
http://www.maxplugins.de/max9_32.php?search=&sort=Author
(for max 9 there are other versions there as well)

Otherwise you can use max cloth which is in your modifier stack drop down under "cloth"

yeh, keep up the good work, you'll learn more by doing lots of little things like the light switch than you will by getting bogged down on longer projects. 1 small crit, it looks like the screws on the left switch aren't aligned properly - the right screw is closer to the switch than the left screw. If you want to get them even, align them to the switch then move one of them out, taking note of how far you move it and then move the other one the same amount in the opposite direction. Sorry if I'm stating the bleeding obvious.

Dude,

First of all - I was definitely joking - my 3d max skills are low - I wouldn't even begin to expect a thank you.

Second - your switches look good. Are there materials applied to them yet? Because if there are both the plastic and the screws need more shine.

And - Steve Marting - thanks for the correction - I don't want to sound stupid smile.gif

I totally understand this, and guess what, I asked the same thing when I was starting.

Going through my old stuff I did:

- a standup mirror (the type which have a frame and stand on the floor)

- a PC case

- a wine bottle and wine glass

- a toolbox with
--- hammer
--- wrench
--- wheel brace
--- screwdriver
--- socket wrench

- a gas cylinder

- a bridge

- a simple helicopter

- a space ship

- a mech

By that time you should be getting pretty good. Just work on building small objects because making a room is easy, its adding in all the little objects to make it look real and used thats the trick, and if you can model objects you'll be fine.

The trouble with me when i am moddeling i have not got a clue what shape to start with when modeling. do you know for the toolbox items did you use an image to work from or a blueprint.

1 more thing i struggle getting good textures i have been on 3dextra that okay but i need some really realistic textures
